Mesta
“HipHop is my wife: Reggaeton & Afro-beat are the chicks I lost my head for.”
Originally a HipHop DJ who broke Reggaeton in Europe, Dj Mesta is set to launch a new trend in music fusing HipHop, Reggaeton, Afro-beat and Reggae Dancehall.
World reknown club specialist, DJ and Italian native DJ Mesta has been playing for a number of years, hosting parties & club nights around the globe, earning the title of “Italy’s finest”. By 1989 he was a Dj, his Djing included clubs and mixtapes, in fact he pioneered the mixtape in Italy. As his reputation grew he started promoting Hip Hop and R'nB club nights throughout his country. The Italian music scene begun to appear small, so in 1993 he moved to London.
His talents as a Dj were quickly recognised: spinning at gigs across London Mesta teamed-up with top Hip Hop Djs like Kofi (DMC UK champ) and Shortee Blitz (Kiss fm), opening nights for established international acts such us The Roots, Mesta established himself as a major UK tape-master and was soon selling mixtapes and Djing throughout Europe while working as a freelance record distributor and promoting records or looking after acts for Hardzone Promotions.
In 1997 Dj Mesta started a HNC course in Radio Production and Broadcasting which enabled him to think seriously about a career in broadcasting. Shortly after starting the course he began working for the Italian radio station Station One as UK correspondent. He also had a mix-show on Bristol station Passion fm and London Unique fm, while writing for AL, Italy's number one Hip Hop magazine and freelancing for various publications such as Echoes, the world’s largest black music weekly.
Tired of being based outside Italy, around 1998 Dj Mesta decided to strengthen the connection with his native country by booking tours for UK acts such as 57th Dynasty, promoting records and, of course, Djing. By the end of 1999 came the final decision: he decided to move back home with the ambition of becoming the top Italian connection for Urban music.
After managing Palazium night club in Torino and promoting live PA's featuring US Hip Hop pioneers like Doug E Fresh and Masta Ace, Dj Mesta launched the Money Game Record Pool and now heads digital distribution service mp3mixtape.com c/o Megabeatz Inc. leading a new trend in the music biz.
Come 2007, Mesta is "killing" Italy's clubland Djing all-over the country,
doing no less than 3 clubs per week with steady residencies in Torino.
Dj Mesta is always busy on the international club scene landing gigs as far as the Middle East, like the night @ Prana in Amman, Jordan.
Another remarkable party that got Mesta praised by promoters for his outstanding “crowd reading” skills was the set at China White - London’s top celebrity club. The promoters ended up booking Mesta for a second set.
Fresh off a busy 2007 topped by gigs in UK & Croatia and a one month tour across Nigeria, a remarkable year topped by headlining La Bomba UK #1 reggaeton event @ the world famous Ministry of Sound in London. Among the many legendary European parties, Mesta djed @ the official Midem 2003 Urban party (Cannes, France) in honor of Rocafella's Jay Z and ending up spinning records for rapper Coolio. In Italy Mesta also launched the Freestyle Arena tour, the 1st ever national freestyle rap contest.
Also busy on radio, Dj Mesta is known for his Full Blast Mixshow: originally a daily Hip Hop/RnB/Dancehall/Reggaeton specialist radio show on Radio Flash 97.6 Torino, Full Blast then became a mixshow broadcasted first on Hitchannel and later on RTL TV 102.5 (3.000.000 daily viewers) while being syndacated worldwide and podcasted on iTunes. Last summer Dj Mesta was co-hosting Bravi Ragazzi (=Goodfellas), a TV show on national channel RAI 2 featuring HipHop/Reggaeton videos & street culture from all over the globe.
A&R @ Selecta/Motivo, Mesta was nominated “Best International Mixtape Dj” @ the last Justo’s Mixtape Awards (NYC). Mixing records and producing beats for over 10 years, Dj Mesta has developed a unique sound based on simplistic techniques, good taste and innovative skills. Drafted as the the one & only Tech.Nition in Italy, Dj Mesta is now member of the US based Bumsquad DJz founded by Latin Prince (Universal) and newborn Nigerian DJs.
One of the first European Hip Hop DJs to play & produce Reggaeton, Mesta is currently in the studio mixing production work for the forthcoming album expected to be released in mid 2009.
The album is set to feature established & up-coming artists, mainly latin:
Bimbo, Gemstar, Alkatraz (Ruff Ryders), Lokixximo, Pryme Status, Cubanito and more. After hitting DJs with crowd acclaimed party-breaks and club remixes of tracks by established acts like Adina Howard, expect a urban crossover album packed with Mesta’s distinctive “HipHop-Reggaeton” club sound capturing that “magic” that defines Mesta’s club parties. It’s a refined blend of Crunk, RnB, Afro-Beat and Tropical rhythms, always mixed in a credible way like only few pros can do.
Waiting on the album, Dj Mesta is now releasing “Out Of Control” feat. Eno: having been influenced by the popularity of various Jamaican acts recording songs on the same track (riddim), DJ Mesta ALTERd what he calls the "Naija riddim", an party beat that will feature established Nigerian acts like Daddy Showkey, Dare Alade, Naeto C and more, capturing the feelings still fresh from his tour in Nigeria. "Out of Control" is the 1st single off the Naija riddim.
